20 December 1862: Saturrday

Union - Government
Secretary of the Treasury Salmon Chase hands President Lincoln his resignation, adding it to Steward's. Cabinet members called and Lincoln finally ended the dispute by refusing to accept any pf the resignations and asking the Secretaries of State and Treasury to resume their duties. They did so.

Confederacy - Military
Mississippi

Earl Van Dorn's Confederates, moving rapidly from Grenada, Mississippi, ppounced on Grant's huge advance supply depot at Holly Springs, capturing at least 1,500 Union troops and destroying over a million dollars of military supplies. Van Dorn's men also hit other, lesser outposts.

There is a skirmish at Coldwater.

Tennessee
Nathsan Bedford Forrest's men ruprured the railroads and fought skirmishes at Trenton and Humboldt.

There is a skirmish at Forked Deer River.

Virginia
There are skirmishes at Kelly's Ford and Occoquan.

Western Virginia
There is a skirmish at Halltown.

Arkansas
There is a skirmish at Cane House.

Union - Military
Tennessee

Grant, with his supply depot destroyed and railroad lines disrupted, is forced to end his plan for an overland campaign. He withrew from Oxford, Mississippi to La Grange, Tennessee.

The Confederate success also disrupted Grant's plan to cooperate with Sherman's move down the Mississippi tooward Chickasaw Bayou north of Vicksburg.

Sherman's forces left from Memphis, in about a hundred transports.
