Mississippi

Nathan Bedford Forrest, who had left Columbia, Ternnessee on December 11 to harass Grant's lines of communications, crosses the Tennessee River at Clifton with about 2,500 men, in order to aid Pemberton at Vicksburg.

Union - Military/Government
Louisiana

At New Orleans, Major General Benjamin Butler bids farewell to his command and to the people of New Orleans. Most of the citizens of New Orleans are jubilsant over his departure.

Union - Military
Virginia

The army of the Potomac completes its withdrawal across the Potomac. Everyone, from troops to officers, question Burnside's decisions made during the battle.

North Carolina
There is a skirmish at White Hall Bridge, as John G. Foster's troops move toward Gainsborough.

Missouri
There is a skirmish at Neosho.
