Union - Government
President Lincoln postpones the execution the Sioux Indians - sentenced to death for their part in the uprising in Minnesota earlier in the year, from 19 to 26 December.

Major GEneral Nathaniel P. Banks assumes command of the Federal Department of the Gulf, replacing Benjamin Butler.

Virginia

The Army of the Potomac camps on Stafford Heights overlooking the Rappahannock River. They are still recovering from the defeat at Fredericksburg.

North Carolina

Union troops continue their expedition toward Goldsborough, with skirmishes ar White Hall, at Mount Olive Station and in Goshen Swamp.

Western Virginia
There is a skirmish at Wardensville,

Nathan Bedford Forrest and his troops continue advancing in Tennessee.
