Confederacy - Military
Virginia

General Lee is criticized because he did not counterattack. However, although the large Union army is beaten at his front, it is protected by massive batteries on the heights across the river. (During the night, the Union army begins to withdraw).

Union - Government
The news of the defeat at Fredericksburg causes consternation in the North. President Lincoln calls upon his generals and advisers for conferences.

Union - Military
Virginia

General Burnside, driven to rashness by his failure, orders the attack renewed at Fredericksburg, but is persuaded by his officers not to attempt it.

There is a skirmish at Waterford.

Arkansas
There is a skirmish near Helena.

Tennessee
Union troops beat off a Confederate attack on a forage train near Nashville.

Mississippi
The Union expedition against the Mobile and Ohio Railroad continues.

North Carolina
The Union expedition under Major General John G. Foster from New Berne, succeeds in taking Kinston.
