Union - Government
As a result of continual political disputes with Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase, the Union Secretary of State, William H. Seward, and his son and assistant, Frederick W. Seward, resign. There resignationds are not accepted, however.

Union - Military
Mississippi

General Grant from his headquarters at Holly Springs issues General Order No. 11: "The Jews, as a class violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasury Department and also department orders, are hereby expelled from the department within 24 hours from the receipt of this order"

There is a tremendous amount of illegal speculation along the Mississippi, and "perhaps Grant equated Jews with the peddlers and speculators that plagued the camps." [The order is never entirely put into effect, and will be rescinded by General Halleck and President Lincoln on Jan 4 1863].

Virginia
Union troops make a reconnaissance on Virginia's Peninsula to Diascund Bridge and Burnt Ordinary.

Missouri
An expedition starts on this day from New Madrid to Clarkton,. (It will last until the 21st.)

North Carolina
Near Goldsborough, the Union expedition sets fire an important bridge, skirmishes, and begins to withdraw to New Berne, at which they will arrive on December 20.
