Sherman's forces advance through destructive fire toward the foot of the bluffs north of Vicksburg near Chickasaw Bayou. However, the advance is stymied by a relatively small portion of Pemberton's troops. The Confederates' position was simply too strong to storm.

S. P. Carter in his east Tennessee expedition passes Moccasin Gap and captures a small group of Confederates on the Blountsville Road.
Louisiana
A skirmish takes place near Plaquemine.

Kentucky
Morgan and his troops skirmish near Johnson's Ferry/Hamilton's Ford on Rolling Fork, and he captured a stockade at Boston.
