A large crowd gathers at Greenpoint, Long Island to witness the launching of the USS Monitor, the recvolutionary ironclad ship built under the direction of John Ericsson.

The ship carrying the two Confederate commissioners, Mason and Slidell, land from a British vessel, completing their delayed voyage after having been arrested by Union soldiers aboard a British vessel so many months ago, and held in prison.
