GWD Today: Lander schedules Civil War Anniversary lecture series
Greenwood, South CArolina -- Lander University’s Office of Continuing Education has arranged a series of nine lectures commemorating the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War. The series will be led by a diverse group of speakers, each focusing on a particular aspect of the war, including Union and Confederate military and civilian leaders.

The lectures will be held on Fridays at 6 p.m., in Lander’s Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center, Room 250; Room 200 on April 1.

The series will open on Feb. 11 with Gerald Y. Pitts, the only South Carolina Member of the American Association of Lincoln Presenters. He will recreate Lincoln’s farewell address when he left Springfield, Ill., in 1861 on his journey to the nation’s capital to begin his presidency. This lecture is sponsored by The Humanities Council SC.

On Feb. 18, the topic will be “The American Civil War on the World Stage.” Lander history professor emeritus Jean Paquette will be the speaker.

“The Calhoun and Clemson Family during the Civil War” will be discussed on Feb. 25 by Dr. Ernest McPherson (Whitey) Lander Jr. He is professor emeritus of history at Clemson University.

On March 11, Dr. Alice Taylor-Colbert will present “The Last Man Standing: Confederate Gen. Stand Watie and Cherokees in the Civil War.” Colbert is the dean of Lander’s College of Arts and Humanities and professor of history.

On March 18, Dr. DeWitt Stone, retired university professor and administrator and director of Lander’s Study Abroad program, will speak on the subject of “What it Was Like to Fight: The Civil War from the South Carolina Soldier’s Perspective.” Stone is the author of “Wandering to Glory: Confederate Veterans Remember Evans’ Brigade.”

“The African American Experience during the Civil War” will be the topic on March 25. Dr. Abel Bartley, associate professor of history and director of Pan-African Studies at Clemson University, will be the lecturer.

On April 1, Dr. Alice Taylor-Colbert of Lander will deliver her second lecture in the series titled “Women In and Out of War: Rebels All.”

Lander graduate and Greenwood County historian Ann Bowen will be the speaker on April 8, and her topic will be “Flight into Oblivion: Jefferson Davis in Cokesbury and Abbeville.”

The final lecture in the series on April 15 will feature Dr. Rod Andrews Jr., professor of history at Clemson University, whose topic will be “Wade Hampton and Reconstruction.” Andrews is the author of “Wade Hampton: Confederate Warrior to Southern Redeemer.”

Each of the nine lectures is free and open to the public but registration is required because of limited seating. To register, call Lander’s Continuing Education Office at 864-388-8426.
