8 April, 1862: Wednesday

Confederate - Government
President Davis declares martial law in eastern Tennessee, threatened by Union troops and pro-Union civilians.

Union - Military
Tennessee-Kentucky border

The losses of the Confederate army are counted. Perhaps 7,000 men, including Brigadier General W.W. Mackall, were captured, as well as 25 field guns, the artillery in the batteries, small arms, and a considerable amount of ammunition.

The news of this Union victory - as well as that of Shiloh, arrive in the various cities equipped with telegraph, both north and south.

New Mexico Territory
At Albuquerque, there is a light skirmish between H.H. Sibley's Confederates and a superior Union column.

Mississippi
The confederate army under Beauregard continues to withdraw toward Corinth.
