Government - Confederate
Richmond

In the capital, Jefferson Davis writes to General Johnston in Tennessee, "I anticipate victory." regarding the upcoming battle at Shiloh.

Military - Union
Virginia

General McClellan begins establishing siege lines in front of Yorktown, Virginia rather than directly attacking the 15,000 Confederate defenders. Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston was rapidly bringing in reinforcements from the Rappahannock to the Peninsula, though the Confederates never numbered much more than half the Union's Army of the Potomac.

South Carolina
Union forces occupy Edisto Island.

Texas
There is brief fighting at San Louis Pass, Texas.

Tennessee
In Nashville, Union military governor of Tennessee Andrew Johnson suspends the mayor, aldermen and councilmen of Nashville for refusing to take an oath to the Union.

Military - Confederates
Tennessee

Confederate General Albert Sydney Johnston, with his army near Shiloh Church and Pittsburg Landing, failed to attack on this day and indeed, were not ready to attack until late in the afternoon. The Confederates were puzzled that Grant's army were not yet aware that the Confederates wew practically in their midst.
