4 March, 1862: Tuesday

Confederacy - Government
Major GEneral John C. Pemberton assumed command of the Confederate Department of South Carolina, Georgia and East Florida in place of Robert E;. Lee. President Davis was having difficulties with General J. E. Johnston over reenlistment of troops in Virginia, and over furloughs. In addition, Confederate Congressmen wanted more guns for defense of the Mississippi, although the government was doing all it could to supply such guns.

New Mexico Territory
Confederate troops under H.H. Sibley enter santa Fe after Union soldiers retire to Fort Union, located to the northeast.

Union - Government/Military
In coomand changes, Grant was told to stay at Fort Henry, Tennessee as district commander while (Charles Ferguson (C. F.) Smith was put in charge of the Union advance up to the Tennessee River, a direct slap at Grant by General Halleck.

The United States Senate confirms Andrew Johnson as brigadier general and Military Governor of Tennessee.

Florida
Amelia Island is occupied by Union forces.

Missouri
There is a Union scout through Laclede county.
There is a Union scout through Wright county.
There is a Union scout through Douglas counties.
