1 April 1862: Tuesday

Civilian - Confederacy
The congregation of the Second Baptist Church of Richmond, having contributed their bell to be cast into cannon, also agreed to purchase enough metal to provide what would be called the Second Baptist Church Battery.

Union - Military
Virginia
The Northern Army of the Potomac continues to move from near Alexandria to Fort Monroe, via the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay. The headquarters of the army also shifted, as General George B. McClellan prepared his assault upon the weak line across the Peninsula near Yorktown - which was held by less than 15,000 men under the command of Major General John Bankhead Magruder.

In the Shenandoah Valley, Union troops under General Nathanial P. Banks, now considerably strengthened, push from Strasburg to Woostock and Edenburg while Stonewall Jackson, guarded by his cavalry, fell back up the valley southward.

Tennessee/Mississippi
There is a Federal expedition by gunboats from Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee to Eastport, Mississippi.

Alabama
There is a Federal expedition via gunboat to Chickasaw, Alabama on the Tennessee River.

On the Mississippi, at Island No. 10, Union soldiers land from small boats, spike 6 guns, and escape safely.

Confederates - Military
Virginia
There was a skirmish at Salem, Virginia.

Missouri
There are skirmishes at Little Sni and at Doniphan, Missouri.
