In Washington, President Lincoln approved a lengthy list of officers for appointment as major and brigadier generals. General Halleck in St. Louis was authorized by Washington to place Brigadier General C. F. Smith in command of the expedition from Fort Henry up the Tennessee, after Halleck accused Grant of not reporting properly at the time of Fort Donelson and other misconduct.

In Richmond, President Davis recalls General Lee from Charleston and South Carolina to be a military adviser in Virgina.

Fighting occurs at Comanche Pass, New Mexico Territory.
John Pope (March 16, 1822 – September 23, 1892) was a career United States Army officer and Union general in the American Civil War. He had a brief but successful career in the Western Theater, but he is best known for his defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run in the East. After the Civil War, he resumed a successful military career in the Indian Wars.
